Experience the Whitsundays Outback

Collinsville adds a different chapter to a Bowen stay: mining history, the story of the pit ponies and a country town shaped by the people who worked here. Set aside a separate day for the main town attractions, or stay overnight to make room for more heritage stops.

This is a flexible plan for visitors with their own vehicle. Travel inland from Bowen via the Bowen Developmental Road and check QLDTraffic before departure. Confirm museum opening arrangements and any tour booking before choosing the order of your visit; the Historical Display Centre's limited opening can affect either day.

Day 1: Meet the Town and Its Pit Ponies

Start with local advice

Begin at the Collinsville Visitor Information Centre at the showgrounds. The centre occupies the original police station, with the old gaol and historical memorabilia behind it. Ask the local team about current opening arrangements, local heritage stops and any access changes before setting out around town.

If you are staying overnight, check your accommodation arrangements first. Council lists Collinsville RV Park at the southern end of the showgrounds on Railway Road, opposite the Workers Club. Free stays are limited to 72 hours and spaces are limited. Council lists accessible toilets and showers; check the current park rules and ask about any specific access needs. This is one option, rather than a required stop for every visitor.

Explore the Coalface Experience

The Coalface Experience at the Collinsville Scottville Workers Club explores the working lives of local coal miners and their families. Its mining displays give context to the pit ponies and the community's history before you visit the sculpture in town.

Confirm museum opening times with the Workers Club on 07 4785 5452. The club's opening hours are not a museum timetable. You can also ask about bistro service and make a lunch stop here, or choose another place in town.

Visit the Pit Pony sculpture

After the museum, visit the life-size bronze Pit Pony sculpture in the town centre. The last working pit ponies retired in 1990. Behind the sculpture, the memorial wall records the community effort that brought this tribute to life.

This is a useful place to pause and connect the museum's mining history with the animals and people who were part of it. Leave time to explore the town's murals and local stories rather than adding a long list of extra stops.

Return to Bowen or stay overnight

If you are visiting for the day, plan your return journey around road conditions and enough rest. If you are staying, settle into your accommodation and choose somewhere in town for dinner. Ask the visitor information team for local dining options, then check current service times and availability with your chosen venue.

Day 2: Make Time for More Local History

Arrange a Historical Display Centre visit

The Collinsville Scottville Historical Society's collection at 81 Garrick Street offers a closer look at everyday life in the district. It is housed in the former hospital and includes local photographs, household objects and medical history.

Arrange this stop in advance through the Historical Society's current contact details. Opening is limited and volunteer-run, so confirm the day and time before travelling. If a confirmed opening falls on your first day, move this stop ahead of the more flexible outdoor attractions.

Add a lookout or an unhurried lunch

Ask the visitor information team about current access to the Miller Street lookout before making it an optional stop. Otherwise, spend more time in town and enjoy a lunch break near the Pit Pony precinct. Keep the day flexible around any tour you have booked.

Arrange a historic mine-site tour

For a separate heritage outing, see the BCCM Bowen Consolidated Coal Mines No1 historic site tour listing. Tours are arranged through the local Historical Society. Confirm the exact site, meeting point, start time, duration and access requirements when booking; do not treat a former mine site as a drop-in attraction.

A guided visit can add another perspective to the mining story. If a tour is not available during your stay, the Coalface Experience, town heritage and Pit Pony sculpture still give you a worthwhile Collinsville visit.
