Coastal paths, headlands and local history

Explore Bowen on foot, from foreshore paths and town murals to the headlands of Cape Edgecumbe. Choose a route that suits your group and the conditions, with time to enjoy the views along the way.

Cape Edgecumbe Walking Trail

The Cape Edgecumbe trail links Horseshoe Bay, Murray Bay and Rose Bay through Bowen’s granite headlands. Highlights include Rotary Lookout, the World War II radar site and Mother Beddock, with changing views of the bays and offshore islands.

Start from Horseshoe Bay or Rose Bay and plan your return. Whitsunday Regional Council lists the full trail as 5 km return. The route includes steps and uphill sections; follow signs and any closures, and choose how far to walk according to your ability and the conditions.

Murray Bay is a coastal stop along the route. If you are considering a swim or snorkel, check current local advice first and read our snorkelling guide.

Foreshore walks

For foreshore scenery, explore the paths beside Queens Beach or the Front Beach precinct. Hansen Park and Horseshoe Bay are linked by another coastal walk.

Mullers Lagoon

Inland, Mullers Lagoon offers a different setting around the wetlands.

Murals and local history

In town, combine the murals with local history and ask Visitor Information for a current map. See History & Heritage for places to explore, or Lookouts for viewpoints including Flagstaff Hill.

Plan your walk

Choose a route that suits everyone in your group. Carry drinking water, wear sturdy shoes and a hat, and follow marked tracks, signs and any closures. Allow for the return journey and changing weather.

Check current route and access information before setting out, especially if you need step-free access. Read Queensland Parks’ walking preparation advice.
